Speaking in terms of color, black is actually the absence of color. Color is transmitted to our eye in the form of light which are traveling in waves. Depending on the frequency of the wave, our eyes will perceive different colors. Black is "seen" only with the absence of those wave length.
It is said that a white colored material will reflect all the different wave length where as black material will absorb all and reflect none. In life, most of what we see is by reflection of light.
